It’s hard to believe that the holiday season has already begun. I’m also super excited that it has begun because I love Christmas. Last year was a blur with welcoming Claire into the world and just trying to survive life with a newborn. Now we have a one year old and life is way more fun. I’ve been thinking about Christmas Traditions To Start This Year now that she is old enough to enjoy more of these things.

Some of these traditions are ones that I did as a child and some are new ones that I want to start with my little family. My heart feels so happy thinking about creating these special memories with Claire in the years to come.

Christmas Traditions To Start This Year

  1. Open one gift on Christmas Eve. My family did this when I was a kid and I always loved it. Although, I think I will create a special Christmas Eve gift that will include something like pajamas and a snack.
  2. Bake and decorate sugar cookies. It’s hard to beat homemade sugar cookies during the holiday season.
  3. Have a Home Alone night. Where we watch Home Alone 1 & 2 and eat the things they eat in the movie like pizza and ice-cream. No crazy shenanigans, though.
  4. Purchase an Angel Tree gift. It’s always wonderful to give to someone in need. I’d like to encourage Claire to do the same and this is a great time to teach her to give.
  5. Drive around and look at Christmas lights. Another must do holiday season activity. An added bonus would be to drink hot chocolate while looking at Christmas lights.
  6. Countdown to Christmas Day. We had a little felt Christmas tree advent calendar as a kid and I loved counting down the days until Christmas. I’d love to get Claire something similar.
  7. Visit Santa Claus. This is a must now that we have a toddler. She was only 2 months old for Christmas last year so this year will be Claire’s first time visiting Santa.
  8. Drink Wassail. My mom always made wassail around Christmas and I now do the same every year. Wassail is my favorite holiday beverage. It feels like Christmas in a mug.
  9. Pick out a new ornament every year. I’d like to let Claire pick out (or make!) an ornament for our tree every year. Last year, for Claire’s first Christmas, we made a salt dough footprint ornament.
  10. Decorate the house. I guess this should be higher up on the list, but I figured it’s a given. We usually start decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving. I love Christmas but I also love Halloween and Thanksgiving so I try not to decorate too early so that each holiday gets its own attention.
  11. Get a real Christmas tree. Kyle and I started this tradition after we got married and I love it. I grew up with artificial Christmas trees, which is completely fine, but there is something magical about having a real Christmas tree.
  12. Blast Christmas music all month long. The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. Really though, music sets the festive mood and I just love playing Christmas music throughout the month of December.
  13. Make a yearly Christmas Card. This is one that I love doing every year. We usually take a family photo in front of our Christmas tree and then create a Christmas card to mail to our friends and family. I also love to display all the wonderful Christmas cards that we receive as part of our Christmas decor.
  14. Open Stockings first on Christmas morning. I love the tradition of fun gifts and treats in everyone’s stockings and definitely want to continue this tradition with my family.
  15. Make Christmas treats. There are so many yummy treats to make during the Christmas season. I like making homemade Chex Mix and Muddy Buddies. It would be lovely to spend an afternoon making various Christmas treats to give to family, friends, or neighbors.
  16. Spend Christmas morning at home in our pajamas. Christmas can be so busy with spending time with family and friends (which I love!) but I want Christmas morning to be spent with just my husband and daughter.
  17. Watch Christmas movies throughout the month. Besides Home Alone 1 & 2 (which are my favorite movies, hence the reason they have their own spot on this list), there are a few other Christmas movies that I watch every year. It really doesn’t feel like Christmas until I watch Christmas Vacation, Elf, Die Hard, and Jingle All The Way. All the other classics are a bonus.

I’m definitely feeling the Christmas spirit after thinking about Christmas traditions to start this year. I’d love to know of any other traditions that you and your family celebrate every Christmas. Leave a comment and let me know.

Here is a list of Christmas Traditions To Start This Year. Now that I have a toddler, I'm excited to begin these new family Christmas Traditions.
